Sohostrut: Nottingham Bodega gig review 13/02/2010

The Bodega is packed to the brim. The soul stylists are out in force tonight. A sea of Faces, resplendent in Fred Perry’s and trusted parkas, adorn its inner portals. There is expectancy in the air. A mood that is to be fulfilled in abundance.

Jonny Brown takes to the stage, sporting a very sharp check shirt, and Twisted Wheel launch into their set. They’re on fire. Blasting out their repertoire of what are fast becoming indie-mod anthems. They’re all there, the tunes from their first album - “One Night On The Street”. “You Stole The Sun”, “We Are Us” and the rest, along with some new songs that sound equally as impressive.

It goes down a treat. It is rare to see atmosphere as charged or the crowd as rampant as this. There’s a short respite from the melee as Johnny plays a quality acoustic version of “Bouncing Bomb”. But the interlude is brief. A few seconds later, Rick Lees and Adam Clarke are back and the band deliver the remainder of their tunes, concluding with the anthem “Oh What Have You Done”, a song that has a special place in this band’s set.

And then its over. The crowd starts to disperse. You stand and drain your lager. Tonight, you know, has been something special. Three bands with fire in their hearts and soul in the frets of their guitars. It has been a vibe to be inspired by, where you can - for a moment - forget about the ordinary, the mundane, the talk of “broken Britain” and dream again. Muse that this scene keeps on moving, reinventing itself through each new generation. After all what else is there for an inspired bohemian to do but keep on keepin’ on? Or sing for a rock and roll band, perhaps.

You dirty rock and rollers.
