Twisted Wheel

Manchester Academy 12/2/2010

by High Voltage

Having being championed by Oasis, you can almost write Twisted Wheel off. Remember Proud Mary? Yeah, me neither… That said, the punk trio are certainly staking a claim in the memory bank. Their set is a driven performance, which barely comes up for air. One part The Clash, one part The Jam, Twisted Wheel are an exemplary paradigm of a lost era and style of music.
And they perform it with honesty, which dissipates any cynicism that might come from critics. When you see their upcoming tour dates littered with stops in Scunthorpe, Doncaster and Hull, they’re definitely embodying that punk ethos. Jonny spits his lyrics and frenetic drums from Adam encompass the pace and chaos of a band who have just about got it under control.

From an embarrassed journalist who had been unprofessional enough to write Twisted Wheel off before they’d even played a note, this was a brilliant set. And for a changing musical world, it’s heart-warming to see a band with an old school sense of grit and earnest determination.
